Indication of singly ionized helium in the white dwarf GD 229

چکیده
We comment on the applicability of the stationary line argument recently used by Jordan et al. (1998) to account for the unusual absorption features in the observed optical spectra of GD 229. Moreover, we provide an alternative explanation based upon the existence of neutral and singly ionized atomic helium atoms as the main elements comprising the atmosphere of this magnetized white dwarf star.

Evidence for helium in the magnetic white dwarf GD 229
The nature of the strong absorption features in the white dwarf GD 229 has been a real mystery ever since it was found to be magnetic in 1974. All attempts to explain the spectrum by line components of hydrogen failed. With the first sets of newly calculated line data for He I in a strong magnetic field we could identify most of the absorption structures in the spectrum with stationary line com...
متن کاملProgress in Modeling Magnetic White Dwarfs
The analysis of magnetic white dwarfs has made considerable progress since the last white dwarf workshop: 1. It could be shown that neither the magnetic white dwarf Grw +70◦8247 (Jordan & Friedrich, 2001) nor LP 790−29 (Jordan & Friedrich 2002, Beuermann et al. 2002) are fast rotators (P < 10 min) but are rotating slowly (P > 20 years). 2. Automatic fitting procedures have been developed which ...
متن کاملDo weak magnetic fields prevent hydrogen from accreting onto metal - line white dwarf stars ? ⋆
The widely accepted assumption is that metals detected in the spectra of a few cool helium-rich white dwarfs cannot be of primordial origin and therefore must be accreted from the interstellar medium. However, the observed abundances of hydrogen are much too low to be compatible with the high accretion rates inferred from metal accretion. Hydrogen accretion is therefore suppressed compared to m...

We report the discovery of spectroscopic variations in GD 323, the prototyp-ical DAB white dwarf. Simultaneous optical spectroscopic observations over five consecutive nights of GD 323 and of PG 1234+482, a non-variable comparison DA white dwarf of similar brightness, are used to reveal quasi-periodic variations in both the hydrogen and helium absorption lines over a timescale of hours. The amp...
متن کاملDirect Distance Measurement to the Dusty White Dwarf GD 362 1
We present trigonometric parallax observations of GD 362 obtained over seven epochs using the MDM 2.4m Hiltner Telescope. The existence of a dust disk around this possibly massive white dwarf makes it an interesting target for parallax observations. The measured parallax for GD 362 places it at a distance of 50.6 −3.1 pc, which implies that its radius and mass are ≈ 0.0106R⊙ and 0.71M⊙, respect...
